Math Centers

This has got to be most of their favorite part of the day. They absolutely enjoy math centers. When we started math centers some of them struggled with the idea of doing it on their own. As we have progressed over the last 2 months they have become more and more independent!! I am so proud of them. The math centers you will see below we're from our pumpkin exploration week. There is more to come.

Teacher led-they created their own pumpkin glyph with a little help from Ms. Murray

Student Led- they measured pumpkin width and length. They used cubes to measure how tall the pumpkin was and use links to measure the width of the pumpkin. They also counted how many seams were around the pumpkin. The counting part was easy, it was hard for them to remember where they started because all of the lines looked alike.

Computer- some created their own jack-o-lantern and some carved their own pumpkin online. Very neat!!

Desk-They had to match the ten frame sets inside the pumpkin to the actual number. They did an absolutely amazing job!

Teacher led- We learned about graphing/sorting. We had to sort the pumpkins by big or small, then we  put them on our graph by the size, also. After we were done we had a discussion about which size pumpkins had the most on the graph and how did we know! Very interesting! I love the way they think!

We finished our pumpkin filled weeks off by cooking a pumpkin snack! This recipe had a tie when it came to whether it was yummy or gross!

  Ingredients

6 orange slices
1 spoonful of white icing
Pretzel Stick/ or green sour straw ( depending on what color you want your stem to be)

Red Ribbon Week!!

We say no to drugs!! To help us celebrate we are wearing different things each day of the week!! Today was jersey day!!!

                                              Hat day!! First take!

                                                             Second take!

Socking it to drugs!!! We wore crazy socks on Wednesday!!

They were supposed to be pointing to their feet!

They sleep ALL DAY!!

We've been learning about nocturnal animals for the last week and a half! We know that their schedule is the complete opposite of ours! We learned about owls, cats, and bats mostly!! Bats eat fruit, cats and owls eat small animals such as mice. Bats have fur and sonar vision which helps them see at night! HOW COOL! We wished we had that vision! We even watched a cool video from National Geographic Kids! After reading one of our books we had a bat fly into our room! She became our new friend! Her name was STELLALUNA! She told us her story, how she tried to live like a regular bird, but she was too different. No matter how different she was, they were still nice to her and tried to help her! They were good friends to each other!

She's asleep!!!

Now about our owls. We learned about Snow Owls, which we realized we  might have a hard time seeing around our homes. We don't get much snow! They are very pretty though! Some of us have seen brown owls in our backyards or at parks! MYTH-OWLS CANNOT TURN THEIR HEADS ALL THE WAY AROUND!! FACT- They turn their heads back and forth so fast it looks as if it goes completely around!

Owls out of SHAPES!!!

We made bats as our snack and they were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!!!

Ingredients

1 oreo split in half
1 chocolate doughnut
2 Candy Eyes/Mini Marshmallows
1/2 Pretzel Stick

Instead of using Marshmallows we decided to use the cream from our Oreos!

We had to make it into some nice eye balls!

Someone was a little anxious!!

It's trying to fly away from the plate :-)

Arghhh Spiders!!!

Last week was all about SPIDERS!! We learned all about spider's body parts, how they make a web, how they catch their food and lots of more good information! We read several different books that focused on spiders. Here are a few shown below.

After reading Magic School Bus Spins A Web, we got to watch the show! It was a great opportunity to compare the book to what they saw in the video! They loved seeing the characters come alive!!

To continue our spider unit, we made spiders in our art center, made spider hats, and finally made a DELICIOUS spider snack!!! Our art center spiders were made out of yarn and pipe cleaners. Our spider hats were extremely fun to make. We read a Haiku poem about spiders and traced the words! We had to learn how to fold our paper to make crinkly legs. It was very interesting!!!
